Ingredients
- 1 pound Newfoundland style salt beef
- 10 cups water
- 2 cups yellow split peas
- 3 carrots, chopped
- 1/2 turnip, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
1
Place the beef in a large container and submerge it completely with water. Refrigerate for an extended period, typically 8 hours or overnight, to allow the excess salt to leach out. Remove the beef from the water, rinse it thoroughly, and cut it into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
2
Combine the cubed beef with 10 cups of water and frozen peas in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat, then gradually decrease the heat to a low-medium setting. Cover the pot and let it simmer for approximately 30 minutes, or until the peas have broken down and become mostly dissolved. Periodically stir or whisk the mixture to facilitate the breakdown of the peas and prevent scorching at the bottom of the pot.
3
Add sliced carrots, turnips, and a generous amount of black pepper to the pot. Continue simmering the mixture for an additional 15 minutes, or until the vegetables have become tender and have broken down to some extent.
