Hearty Ham and Bean Stew
Ingredients
  • 1 pound dry great Northern beans
  • 1/2 pound cooked ham, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 6 cups water, or as needed to cover
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary ingredients before commencing the recipe.
2
Rinse and prepare the beans by submerging them in a large stockpot filled with cold water. Allow the beans to soak overnight or for at least 8 hours, permitting them to rehydrate and soften.
3
Drain the water from the stockpot and rinse the beans again to remove any impurities.
4
Return the beans to the stockpot, adding diced ham, sautéed onion, a drizzle of sugar, chopped parsley, and a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mixture.
5
Add sufficient water to cover the beans, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
6
Place the stockpot over high heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
7
Once boiling, reduce the heat to a low simmer and allow the beans to cook until they are tender, periodically adding more water as needed. This process should take approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
8
Once the beans are cooked, serve them hot and indulge in the fruits of your labor.
