Heart-Shaped Scandinavian Waffles
Ingredients
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 pinch salt
Instructions
1
Combine egg yolks and white sugar in a large mixing bowl, then use an electric mixer to beat the mixture until it becomes light and airy.
2
Next, incorporate vanilla sugar into the bowl, followed by water, until everything is well combined. Stir in half of the melted butter, half of the buttermilk, and half of the flour. The mixture should be smooth at this point.
3
Now, add the remaining butter, buttermilk, flour, ground cardamom, and salt to the bowl. Use a mixer to beat everything together until it forms a smooth batter.
4
In a separate mixing container, use an electric mixer to whip egg whites until they become stiff and hold their shape.
5
Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter, making sure to incorporate as much air as possible.
6
Heat a waffle iron according to its manufacturer's instructions.
7
Spoon approximately 1/3 cup of the batter into the preheated waffle iron, close the lid, and cook until the waffle is golden brown, taking about 5 minutes. Remove the waffle to a plate and serve. If using a heart-shaped iron, break the waffle into individual hearts for serving. Repeat with the remaining batter.
