Combine the majority of the beans in a small bowl and use a spoon to mash them into a uniform consistency; reserve for later use.\nTransfer the remaining beans and water to a medium-sized saucepan placed over medium heat. Allow the mixture to cook gently until it reaches a simmering temperature. Introduce garlic, pepper, salt, and liquid smoke into the saucepan and stir to combine.\nAdd the mashed bean paste back into the saucepan with the whole beans, stirring until they are fully incorporated. Incorporate the onion into the mixture and continue to simmer until it is slightly tender, approximately 10 minutes.
