Ingredients
- 4 cups chopped pitted honey dates
- 3/4 cup orange juice
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 cups quick-cooking oats
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to its desired temperature of three hundred twenty-five degrees Fahrenheit, or one sixty-five degrees Celsius.
2
Next, prepare a nine by eleven-inch baking dish by spraying it with cooking spray and covering the bottom with parchment paper.
3
In a large saucepan, combine dates, orange juice, and lemon juice over medium-low heat. Stir the mixture frequently until the dates become soft and tender, approximately six minutes pass.
4
In a separate bowl, combine whole wheat flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the melted butter to the mixture and stir until well combined.
5
Press half of the oat mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
6
Spread the date mixture over the oat mixture, followed by a thin layer of remaining oat mixture on top. Gently press down on the mixture to ensure it adheres evenly.
7
Bake in the preheated oven until a golden brown color is achieved, approximately twenty minutes pass.
8
Allow the baked goods to cool completely in the pan at room temperature for about thirty minutes.
9
Refrigerate until chilled before cutting into squares, approximately one hour later.
