Ingredients
- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup low-fat milk
- 1 cup white whole wheat flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup low-fat milk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup low-fat milk
Instructions
1
Start by mixing the yeast into a small amount of water in a tiny bowl. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, allowing the yeast to activate and become frothy.
2
Combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1 cup of sugar in a large 2-quart container. Make sure to mix everything thoroughly, as this will prevent lumps from forming when you add the milk and yeast mixture later on.
3
Slowly pour in 1 cup of milk, followed by the activated yeast mixture. Cover the container loosely and let it sit for a while until you notice bubbles forming on the surface.
4
Consider this day 1 of a 10-day process, during which time you'll be nurturing your starter to the perfect consistency. Leave it loosely covered and let it sit at room temperature.
5
Over the next few days, take a spoon to gently stir your starter every day. On day 5, you'll add in 1 cup of white whole wheat flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of milk.
6
For the next few days, simply stir your starter without adding any new ingredients. This will help it become even more active and robust.
7
On day 10, you'll add in a final batch of ingredients: 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of white whole wheat flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of milk.
8
Once you've reached this point, it's time to bake your first loaf! Remove 1 cup of the starter and use it to make your bread, then give the remaining 2 cups to friends who might be interested in trying out this recipe. You can also share your favorite Amish Bread recipe with them.
9
Finally, transfer the remaining 1 cup starter to a container in the refrigerator or start the process all over again from step 2.
