Ingredients
- 2 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
- 2 cups water
- 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup oyster sauce
- 1 (12 ounce) container fully cooked luncheon meat (such as Spam)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 5 sheets sushi nori (dry seaweed)
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary ingredients and materials.
2
Soak uncooked rice in water to cover it completely for 4 hours; drain and rinse thoroughly.
3
Heat 2 cups of water in a medium-sized saucepan over high heat, bringing it to a rolling boil. Add the rice and stir gently to combine. Reduce the heat to a lower setting, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
4
Once the rice has finished cooking, remove the saucepan from the heat source and stir in a small amount of rice vinegar. Allow it to cool down to room temperature.
5
In a separate, medium-sized bowl, combine sugar, soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Whisk the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved.
6
Slice luncheon meat lengthwise into 10 equal slices, or to your desired thickness. Marinate the sliced luncheon meat in the sauce mixture for 5 minutes.
7
Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the sliced luncheon meat until it is lightly browned on both sides, approximately 2 minutes per side.
8
Cut nori sheets in half and lay them flat on a clean, work surface.
9
Position a rice press in the center of a nori sheet, and apply gentle pressure to compress the rice tightly inside. Remove the press.
10
Place a slice of luncheon meat on top of the compressed rice, and then remove it from the press.
11
Wrap nori around the rice, sealing its edges with a small amount of water. The rice can also be formed by hand into the shape of the meat slices, about 1-inch thick.
12
Serve musubi warm or chilled.
