Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup whole milk
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius).
2
Take a large mixing container and combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Use your hands or a pastry blender to break down any lumps in the ingredients until they resemble small grains. Then, pour in the milk all at once and mix everything together with a large spoon until you have a cohesive dough. The resulting mixture should be sticky and wet.
3
Cover your hands in flour, then gently knead the dough for 3 or 4 cycles. Be careful not to overwork the dough, as this can make it difficult to shape. If necessary, add a small amount of flour to prevent the dough from sticking to your hands.
4
Allow the dough to rest for a short period of time, giving it a chance to relax and become more manageable.
5
Take small pieces of the dough - about 12 in total - and shape them into balls. Be gentle when handling the dough, as overworking can cause it to become tough. Place these balls onto ungreased baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each one.
6
Using your hands covered in flour, gently press down on each ball to flatten it slightly. Try to achieve a thickness of about half an inch.
7
Place the baking sheets in your preheated oven and bake for 11 to 12 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly browned. Remove from the oven and serve hot with melted butter.
