Ham and Potato Bake
Ingredients
  • 6 small potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 7 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2/3 pound leftover cooked ham, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 (8 ounce) package shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
Instructions
1
Begin by placing potatoes into a large container and submerging them in salted water. Next, bring the mixture to a rolling boil before lowering the heat to a moderate level and allowing it to simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until tender.
2
Concurrently, preheat the oven to a high temperature of 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Meanwhile, prepare a baking dish with a capacity of 1 1/2 quarts by coating it lightly with grease.
3
As the potatoes reach the final stages of cooking, melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a pan over medium heat. Add diced ham and sautéed onion until the onion becomes soft and translucent, approximately 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
4
Once the potatoes are almost done, drain them and combine them with the ham mixture by stirring to blend. Transfer this mixture to a prepared baking dish.
5
In a separate pan, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to create a smooth paste-like consistency, and continue cooking until it reaches this state, approximately 5 minutes.
6
Gradually whisk milk into the flour mixture to create a smooth and creamy texture. Season with salt and black pepper, then continue cooking until thickened, about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to a moderate level and stir in Cheddar cheese until it has melted.
7
Pour this cheese sauce over the ham mixture, then sprinkle bread crumbs on top.
8
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until the sauce is bubbly and golden brown, approximately 25-30 minutes.
9
Serve hot and indulge in the delicious dish!
