Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 2 1/2 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 large onions, chopped
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
- 3/4 cup white wine
- 1/3 cup water
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a medium-high temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 175 degrees Celsius, if you prefer).
2
Next, take a moment to prepare your baking dish by coating it with softened butter. This will ensure that your dish releases easily once it's done.
3
To begin assembling the dish, combine sliced potatoes and chopped onions in a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
4
Now, divide the potato mixture into three equal parts and spread one-third of it into your prepared baking dish.
5
Then, sprinkle half of the Gruyère cheese over the potatoes in the baking dish.
6
Add another layer of potatoes on top, followed by a generous sprinkling of the remaining Gruyère cheese.
7
Next, layer the final potatoes on top of the dish and sprinkle with a pinch of Gruyère cheese for good measure.
8
Mix together water and wine in a small bowl, then pour the liquid over the potatoes in the dish.
9
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to allow the potatoes to cook evenly and tenderly.
10
Bake in your preheated oven for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
11
Remove the foil to reveal a beautifully cooked potato dish. Pour cream evenly over the potatoes, making sure to cover them completely.
12
Bake again, this time uncovered and without foil, for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the cream and brown the top of the dish.
