  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/3 cup cold butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine brown sugar and water in a large saucepan, stirring until the mixture reaches a rolling boil. Gradually decrease heat to a low simmer and add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, stirring until fully incorporated. Cover the saucepan temporarily while preparing the batter.

In a separate medium-sized bowl, whisk together flour, white sugar, baking powder and salt. Using your fingers or a fork, work 1/3 cup of butter into the dry ingredients until you achieve a crumbly texture with lumps no larger than small crumbs. Create a central depression and pour in milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla all at once, stirring just until the dry ingredients are fully absorbed.

Return the saucepan to a full boil and carefully drop large spoonfuls of the batter into the boiling sugar mixture. Cover the saucepan tightly and continue to simmer over medium heat, without lifting the lid, for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the largest dumpling comes out clean.
