Grandma's Southern Onion Rings
Ingredients
  • 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt, divided
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper, divided
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 3 large sweet onions, peeled and sliced into thick rings
Instructions
1
Heat a generous amount of oil in a substantial skillet or deep-fryer to a high temperature of 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
2
Prepare the coating mixture by placing flour in a shallow dish and mixing it with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. In another container, combine egg whites, milk, vinegar, and the remaining salt and pepper until well combined.
3
Dip onion rings into the wet mixture before coating them evenly with the flour mixture. Next, dip the coated onion rings in the egg white mixture once more and then coat them again with the flour mixture.
4
Fry onion rings in the hot oil, one or two at a time, to prevent overcrowding and ensure even cooking, until they turn golden brown. Remove the onion rings from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels, serving them immediately.
