Grandma's Cheesy Beef Casserole
Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, or more to taste
Instructions
1
Preheat a large skillet over high heat and cook ground beef until it's nicely browned, breaking it apart into small pieces as it cooks. This should take around 5 to 7 minutes; discard any excess fat that rises to the surface during cooking.
2
Combine tomato sauce, sugar, garlic salt, and a pinch of salt in the skillet with the ground beef. Allow these flavors to meld together over low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3
Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook egg noodles until they're tender but still retain some firmness in the center, usually taking 7 to 9 minutes. Stir occasionally during this time.
4
In a separate process, preheat your oven to the recommended temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent the casserole from sticking.
5
In another bowl, combine sour cream, softened cream cheese, and finely chopped onion.
6
Layer half of the cooked egg noodles into the prepared casserole dish, followed by half of the sour cream mixture and half of the ground beef mixture. Repeat this layering process once more, finishing with a layer of Cheddar cheese on top.
7
Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake until the cheese is melted, golden brown, and bubbly, typically taking 25 to 30 minutes.
