- crushed red pepper flakes to taste

Break the ground beef into small pieces and place them in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Gradually add water to the pot, stirring constantly to help break down the meat, until it reaches a uniform texture. Combine the ground beef mixture with tomato sauce, ketchup, sugar, chili powder, salt, and pepper in the pot. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally.

Once boiling, decrease the heat to low and let it simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the sauce has thickened to a medium consistency that is neither too runny nor too thick.
