Garlic Steamed Artichokes

  • 2 whole artichokes
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 bay leaf

Remove the stems from the artichokes and discard them, ensuring that the base of each artichoke is level. Trim the top inch off the artichokes and discard them as well. Using kitchen scissors, carefully snip the spiky edges from each artichoke leaf.

Prepare a pot by filling it with about two inches of water, and add some garlic, lemon juice, and a bay leaf to the water. Place a steamer basket inside the pot, making sure that the water doesn't overflow onto the bottom of the steamer.

Arrange the artichokes in the steamer basket, with their flat bases resting on a stable surface.

Place the pot over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil, then cover it with a lid. Continue cooking until the leaves can be easily pulled away from the artichoke, taking about 20 to 30 minutes.
