Fried Morel Mushrooms
Ingredients
  • 1 pound fresh morel mushrooms - dirt gently brushed off and mushrooms halved lengthwise
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • salt to taste
Instructions
1
Start by placing the halved morel mushrooms in a large container, covering them with cold, lightly salted water. Refrigerate the mushrooms for about 5 minutes to loosen any dirt that may be clinging to their surface.
2
Next, pour off the salted water and rinse the mushrooms thoroughly with fresh water to remove any remaining dirt or debris. Repeat this process two more times, as the crevices of the mushrooms may harbor tiny stones or insects that need to be eliminated.
3
After thoroughly rinsing the mushrooms a final time, allow them to drain on paper towels to remove excess moisture. This step is crucial in helping the mushrooms hold their shape during cooking.
4
Now, place a shallow bowl of flour in front of you. Heat a generous amount of vegetable shortening in a large skillet over high heat until it reaches a very hot temperature.
5
Roll the mushrooms in the flour, gently pressing the coating onto their surface to ensure it adheres evenly. Tap off any excess flour from the mushrooms before proceeding.
6
Once you've coated the mushrooms in flour, carefully lay them in the hot shortening. Pan-fry until they're golden brown and the flour coating is crispy, taking about 5 to 8 minutes to achieve this.
7
During the cooking process, be sure to turn the mushrooms frequently to prevent them from burning.
8
Finally, remove the morels from the skillet and drain them on paper towels to remove excess moisture. Season with salt to taste, and enjoy your deliciously prepared morel mushrooms!
