Fried Cowboy Bread
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 3/4 cup cold milk
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
1
Combine the water, milk, and sugar in a large bowl to create a liquid mixture. Add the yeast on top of this mixture, allowing it to sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to allow the yeast to activate and dissolve.
2
Next, incorporate the egg and butter into this liquid mixture, followed by the addition of salt, nutmeg, and 2 cups of flour. Continue mixing until all ingredients are harmoniously combined.
3
Gradually incorporate the remaining 1/2 cup of flour into the mixture, stirring until the dough becomes smooth and cohesive. Remove the dough from the bowl and transfer it to a lightly floured surface, where kneading will take place.
4
Knead the dough for 10 minutes, ensuring it becomes elastic and smooth. Once complete, shape the dough into 8 equal portions.
5
Transfer each portion to a lightly greased bowl and let it rise until it has doubled in size. Allow the dough to rest for an additional 20 minutes before proceeding.
6
Roll out each of these 8 portions into balls with a diameter of 8 to 10 inches.
7
Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, preparing it for frying the bread pieces. Fry each piece of bread for 30 to 60 seconds on each side, or until it develops a light to medium brown color.
