Filipino Steamed Cake
Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 1/4 cups Edam cheese, shredded
Instructions
1
Preheat your steamer by filling a wok or saucepan with water, leaving about an inch at the top. Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
2
Next, prepare your molds by lightly coating them with oil to prevent sticking. This will ensure easy removal once the putos are cooked.
3
In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking powder until well combined.
4
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, evaporated milk, and water until smooth.
5
Gradually add the dry mixture to the egg mixture, stirring gently until the batter is evenly blended.
6
Spoon the batter into the prepared molds, filling them about two-thirds of the way full. Top each mold with a layer of shredded cheese.
7
Place the steamer basket into the wok or saucepan, and gently lower the molds into it. Cover the top of the wok or saucepan with a lid to trap the steam.
8
Steam the putos over medium-high heat until a toothpick inserted into the center of one comes out clean, approximately 30 minutes.
9
Remove the putos from the steamer and let them cool on a wire rack before serving warm or at room temperature.
