Easy Wheat Rolls
Ingredients
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 1 3/4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
Instructions
1
Combine yeast and warm water in a large bowl, allowing it to become frothy and bubbly after 10 minutes of waiting.
2
Combine sugar, salt, 1/4 cup melted butter, egg, and whole wheat flour in a separate bowl, then gradually add the yeast mixture to create a smooth dough.
3
Gradually incorporate all-purpose flour into the dough, one half-cup at a time, until it becomes smooth and elastic after about 8 minutes of kneading.
4
Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface and continue kneading until it becomes smooth and elastic.
5
Lightly grease a large bowl, place the dough inside, and coat it evenly with oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm environment until it has doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
6
Punch down the dough and cover it again, allowing it to rise once more in a warm environment until it has doubled in size again, about 30 minutes.
7
Prepare muffin cups by greasing them with butter or cooking spray to accommodate the dough's shape.
8
Divide the dough into two equal portions and roll each portion into a 6x14 inch rectangle.
9
Cut the rectangles into twelve 7x1 inch strips and roll each strip up into a spiral shape.
10
Place the spirals into the prepared muffin cups and brush the tops with melted butter.
11
Allow the dough to rise uncovered in a warm environment for 40 minutes, or until it has doubled in bulk.
12
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the muffins are golden brown.
13
Remove the muffins from the oven and brush them with melted butter again for added flavor.
