Easy Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (the equivalent temperature is 190 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, lightly coat a large baking sheet with a thin layer of oil or cooking spray.
3
Mix together flour, softened margarine, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Combine 1 cup of buttermilk and an egg into the mixture, stirring until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly dusted surface and gently knead it a few times.
4
Form the dough into a round loaf shape and place it on the prepared baking sheet. The dough may feel slightly sticky to the touch.
5
Mix equal parts melted butter and 1/4 cup of buttermilk in a small bowl. Brush the loaf with this mixture, making sure to cover it evenly.
6
Using a sharp knife, carefully cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf. This will help control how the bread expands during baking.
7
Bake the loaf in your preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into its center comes out clean, taking 45 to 50 minutes. Check for doneness after the first 30 minutes of baking, and you can continue to brush the loaf with butter while it cooks.
