Take off the label from the can of condensed milk and position it in a 3 1/2- to 4 1/2-quart slow cooker. Fill the slow cooker with water until it's fully submerged, covering the can completely. Secure the lid on the slow cooker.

Cook on High for 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours, ensuring the can remains covered with water at all times. Use tongs to carefully lift out the hot can once it's done; let it sit for at least 25 minutes to cool down, making sure it's safe to handle. Never try to open the can when it's still scorching hot, as the steam inside might burst out and cause a mess.

Carefully remove the lid from the can and pour its contents into a covered bowl. Add a few drops of vanilla extract to the dulce de leche, mixing it well before serving.
