Ingredients
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 1 (14 ounce) can EAGLE BRAND® Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Ice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is equivalent to 175 degrees Celsius.
2
Heat a heavy skillet over medium-low heat and cook three-quarters of a cup of sugar until it melts and turns caramel-colored, stirring constantly throughout the process.
3
Pour the cooked sugar into eight 6-ounce ungreased custard cups, tilting them to ensure the bottoms are completely coated.
4
In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and then add one and three-quarters cups of water, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and salt. Divide the mixture among the prepared custard cups.
5
Arrange the custard cups in a large, shallow baking dish and fill it with one inch of hot water.
6
Bake the custard cups in the preheated oven until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, approximately taking about 25 minutes.
7
Transfer the custard cups to a wire rack and let them cool for one hour. Then, chill them in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
8
Make a sugar garnish while the flans are chilling. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and fill a medium-sized metal bowl halfway with ice.
9
Combine one cup of sugar and a quarter cup of water in a medium-sized saucepan, stirring to combine. Cover the pan and bring it to a boil over high heat.
10
Cook the sugar mixture until it turns light brown, taking about 5 to 6 minutes. Immediately place the pan on top of the ice for one minute.
11
Carefully pour the sugar mixture over the prepared baking sheet, allowing it to cool. Once cooled, peel the sugar off the foil and use it as a garnish.
12
Loosen the sides of the flans with a small knife and invert them onto rimmed serving plates. Top with sugar garnish or as desired.
