Ingredients
- 1 (19 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup fine dry bread crumbs
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cracked black peppercorns
- 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
1
Combine the garbanzo beans in a large bowl and mix until they're well broken down. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, parsley, ground cumin, turmeric powder, baking powder, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Use your hands to thoroughly incorporate all the ingredients together.
2
Form the mixture into small, round shapes, approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter. You should end up with around 18 to 24 of these shapes. If the mixture doesn't hold its shape, add a small amount of water to help it come together.
3
Heat the oil in a deep frying device to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Gently place the formed mixture into the hot oil, and fry until they're golden brown. If you don't have a deep frying device, heat the oil in a heavy, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Be prepared to adjust the heat slightly after the first few falafels, and make sure to stir them frequently so they brown evenly.
