Date Oat Crumble
Ingredients
  • 1 cup pitted and chopped dates, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup cold water, or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, or more to taste
  • 1 3/8 cups self-rising flour
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 1 cup oats
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
Instructions
1
Heat the oven to its highest temperature setting, which is equivalent to 355 degrees F (or 180 degrees C). \nNext, take a 9-inch square baking dish and apply a thin layer of grease to prevent the filling from sticking. \nNow, prepare the main ingredients by combining dates, water, sugar, and a hint of vanilla in a medium-sized saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat and gently stir the mixture until it thickens into a smooth, paste-like consistency. If the filling becomes too dense, add a little more water to achieve the desired texture. Remove the saucepan from the heat source and allow it to cool down slightly.\nIn a separate bowl, use your hands to combine flour and margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add oats and sugar, stirring until they are evenly incorporated into the flour mixture.\nPress half of the crumble mixture into the prepared baking dish to form a crust. Then, spoon the cooled filling over the crust, smoothing it out with the back of a spoon and leaving a small border around the edges of the dish. Finally, sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture evenly over the filling.\nPlace the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown, taking approximately 40 to 45 minutes.
