Crispy Tso's Tofu
Ingredients
  • 1 (14 ounce) package extra-firm tofu, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons sambal oelek
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
1
Place the block of tofu on a plate, covering it with multiple layers of paper towels for better absorption.
2
Add another weight on top and apply pressure to the tofu for 30 minutes, allowing it to compress and release excess moisture.
3
Remove the tofu from the weight and gently pat it dry with paper towels, discarding any excess liquid that may have accumulated.
4
Cut the tofu into small cubes and place them in a shallow dish, allowing them to absorb the flavors.
5
Allow the tofu cubes to marinate in a mixture of 2 tablespoons soy sauce and sesame oil for at least 10 minutes, or until they have absorbed most of the liquid.
6
In a separate bowl, combine 3 ingredients: soy sauce, maple syrup, and sambal oelek. Whisk them together until well combined, then add garlic, sesame oil, and green onions to the mixture.
7
Set this sauce aside for later use.
8
Drain any remaining liquid from the tofu cubes and place them in a large plastic bag.
9
Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to the bag and seal it, then gently shake until the tofu is evenly coated with a layer of cornstarch.
10
Heat 1-2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, allowing it to reach the desired temperature.
11
Add the tofu cubes to the skillet and cook for 4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
12
Remove the tofu from the skillet and transfer it to a plate, wiping the skillet clean with a paper towel.
13
Pour 1-2 tablespoons of the sauce into the skillet and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until it has thickened slightly.
14
Return the tofu to the skillet and toss it with the sauce until well combined, then serve hot.
