Ingredients
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia®), very thinly sliced and separated into rings
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 quart vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions
1
Submerge buttermilk into a container, then add sliced onions to the liquid. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
2
Heat oil in a deep-frying device or large cooking vessel to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
3
Mix flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and paprika in a bowl. Process onions that have been immersed in buttermilk by removing them from the liquid, allowing any surplus liquid to drip away, and then coat them evenly in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour from the onions to prevent over-coating.
4
Fry onion rings in the preheated oil until they turn golden brown, taking 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer the fried onion rings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
