Ingredients
- 1 large Vidalia or other sweet onion
- 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk, or as needed
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
- 1/8 teaspoon seasoned salt, or to taste
Instructions
1
Prepare the ingredients by slicing the onion into thin, uniform rings of approximately 6 millimeters in thickness.
2
Heat a substantial amount of oil in a deep-frying device to a high temperature of 365 degrees Fahrenheit (185 degrees Celsius). Position a wire grid over a sheet of aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
3
Establish the breading process by arranging three shallow, wide dishes in a row. In the first dish, combine the dry ingredients of flour, baking powder, and salt in a uniform mixture. In the second dish, blend the liquid ingredients of milk and egg together until well combined. Place a layer of bread crumbs in the third dish for added texture.
4
Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated with a uniform layer of dry ingredients. Transfer the onion ring to the egg mixture and use a fork to coat it evenly, working from all sides. Gently lift the onion ring with the fork and allow any excess liquid to drip back into the dish. Place the coated onion ring in the bread crumbs and turn it several times to achieve an even layer of crunchy texture. Repeat this process one more time, tapping any excess bread crumbs back into the dish before placing it on the wire grid to await further processing.
5
Deep-fry small batches of 3 to 4 onion rings at a time in the preheated oil until they turn golden brown and crispy, taking approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the fried onion rings from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels while you continue to deep-fry the remaining onion rings.
6
Sprinkle a generous amount of seasoning salt over the fried onion rings before serving.
