Crispy Navajo Fry Bread
Ingredients
  • 2 cups oil for frying
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/2 cups warm milk
Instructions
1
Preheat the deep fryer or large saucepan to a high temperature of 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2
Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing container; gradually add milk to create a smooth, pliable dough. Divide the dough into 18 equal portions and shape each portion into a round shape, approximately 2 inches in diameter. Create a small indentation in the center of each round to help maintain its flat shape during frying.
3
Carefully add 3 or 4 dough rounds at a time to the hot oil, taking care not to overcrowd the container. Fry until bubbles form on the surface and the rounds turn golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove the fried dough from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
