Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons grill seasoning, such as McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless beef sirloin steak, cut into 2 1/2 x 1/4 inch strips
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- salt and pepper to taste
- 3 cups canola oil for deep frying
Instructions
1
Combine the egg, buttermilk, grill seasoning, and 1/2 cup of flour in a large bowl and mix until the ingredients are fully incorporated and have a smooth consistency.
2
Add the beef to the bowl and thoroughly coat it with the mixture, ensuring that every piece is well-covered. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together.
3
In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 1/2 cups of flour with garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined. Remove the steak strips from their buttermilk marinade and gently shake off any excess moisture.
4
Dredge each steak piece in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat it evenly, and place the coated pieces on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer to allow the steak strips to firm up, which can take anywhere from 1 hour to overnight.
5
Heat oil in a deep fryer or cast iron skillet to 370 degrees F (185 degrees C).
6
Carefully drop a few frozen steak pieces into the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown on the outside, about 5 minutes. It's essential to avoid overcrowding the frying oil and not allowing the steak strips to thaw before frying, as this can affect their texture. Once golden brown, remove the fried steak pieces to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
