Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 1/4 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 1/4 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 4 (4 ounce) beef cube steaks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 very large sweet onions (such as Vidalia®), thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef stock
- 1 cup milk
Instructions
1
Combine the flour, cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a shallow bowl. Thoroughly blend the ingredients until they are well combined. Set aside 1/3 cup of the mixture for later use.
2
Dip each cube steak into the remaining flour mixture, pressing it gently onto both sides to ensure even coverage.
3
Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, allowing the foam to dissipate. Once heated, cook the steaks in the skillet until the coating is golden brown on both sides, taking approximately 4 minutes per side. Flip only once.
4
Transfer the cooked steaks to a serving platter.
5
In the same skillet, spread out the onions and cook over medium heat with any remaining oil and butter until they become translucent, taking about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir the onions frequently during this time.
6
Sprinkle the reserved flour mixture over the cooked onions and continue to cook, stirring constantly, for an additional minute. Then, pour in beef stock and milk, bringing the mixture to a boil.
7
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally until the steaks are tender.
