Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons white sugar, or more to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups cornmeal, or as needed
- 3 cups vegetable oil for frying
- vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise, or to taste
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste
Instructions
1
Begin by heating water in a large cooking vessel until it reaches its boiling point. Next, add sugar, butter, and salt to the water, stirring constantly until the sugar has fully dissolved.
2
Lower the heat of your cooking vessel to a low setting and whisk in 1 cup of cornmeal until it forms a smooth, consistent mixture.
3
Then, stir in the remaining 1/2 cup of cornmeal to create a thick, manageable dough.
4
In a separate cooking vessel, heat 3 cups of vegetable oil to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). This will be used for frying the cornmeal sticks.
5
Before starting to shape the dough, make sure your hands are well-greased with 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil. This will prevent the dough from sticking to your hands.
6
Scoop out about 3 tablespoons of the cornmeal dough and shape it into a long, thin stick approximately 1/2-inch wide. Repeat this process with the remaining dough, re-greasing your hands as necessary.
7
Fry the cornmeal sticks in batches of 3 or 4 at a time, using the heated vegetable oil, until they turn golden brown.
8
Drain the fried cornmeal sticks on paper towels and keep them warm until serving.
9
Meanwhile, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, and garlic salt in a bowl until well combined. This will be used as the dipping sauce for the cornmeal sticks.
