Crispy Blooming Onion
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for deep-frying
Instructions
1
Acquire all necessary ingredients.
2
Create a dipping sauce by mixing together mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl; chill until required.
3
Prepare the signature blooming onion: Whisk together milk and egg in a large bowl that is deep enough to submerge the onion completely.
4
Combine flour, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, and cumin in a separate container.
5
Cut off about 3/4 to 1 inch from the top and bottom of the onion, then remove its skin. Remove the 1-inch diameter core from the middle of the onion.
6
Using a large, sharp knife, slice down the center of the onion 3/4 of the way through; turn the knife 90 degrees and slice again.
7
Continue slicing each section in half until you have a total of 16 sections. Be extremely cautious not to cut through the bottom of the onion.
8
Spread the petals apart, dip them in the milk mixture, and coat them thoroughly with the flour mixture.
9
Separate the petals again and sprinkle the flour mixture between them.
10
Dip the onion sections into the milk mixture and then coat them again with the flour mixture. Place the battered onion in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes while you heat oil.
11
Pour enough oil to cover the onion into a deep fryer or deep pot. Heat the oil to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Fry the onion right-side-up in hot oil until it turns golden brown, approximately 10 minutes.
12
Drain the onion on a rack or paper towels. Open the center of the onion wide enough to fit the bowl of dipping sauce and serve warm.
