Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
- 3/4 teaspoon white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
1
Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a medium-sized saucepan over a moderate flame. Introduce the sliced onion into the pan and cook until it becomes soft and slightly transparent, approximately 5 minutes, during which time stir the minced garlic in towards the end of this cooking period.
2
Next, add the undrained canned tomatoes, a handful of chopped fresh basil leaves, a spoonful of sugar, a pinch of dried oregano, a few pinches of salt and pepper; stir to combine as the mixture reaches its boiling point. Continue to boil until most of the liquid has evaporated, roughly 5 minutes.
3
Remove the saucepan from the heat source. Introduce a generous amount of heavy cream and melted butter into the pan; stir to combine.
4
Return the saucepan to the heat source and simmer over a very low flame for an additional 5 minutes.
