Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese
Ingredients
  • 1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened - divided
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (8 ounce) package shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 (8 ounce) package shredded mild Cheddar cheese
Instructions
1
Begin by preheating your oven to a high temperature of 375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 190 degrees Celsius, if you prefer).
2
Next, prepare a baking dish by lining it with parchment paper to prevent any food residue from sticking.
3
Now, bring a substantial amount of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Cook the elbow macaroni until it is almost fully cooked and retains some firmness, which should take around 7 minutes. Drain the pasta in a large bowl and season it with a pinch of salt.
4
Meanwhile, combine 1/2 cup of butter with the cooked macaroni in the bowl. This will add a rich flavor to your dish.
5
In another bowl, blend together 1/4 cup of butter, sour cream, cream cheese, sharp Cheddar cheese, and an egg yolk. Mix in flour, a small amount of salt, cayenne pepper, and milk into the sour cream mixture.
6
Now, spread a layer of 1/4 cup sour cream sauce over the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Combine any remaining sour cream sauce with the cooked macaroni and pour it into the baking dish, followed by a sprinkle of mild Cheddar cheese.
7
Finally, place your casserole in the preheated oven and bake until it is heated through and the cheese on top has melted, taking around 15 minutes.
