Classic Shepherd’s Pie
Ingredients
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 5 carrots, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
1
Gather all the necessary ingredients before starting to prepare your dish.
2
Fill a large pot with salted water and bring it to a rolling boil. Then, carefully add the potatoes and cook them until they are tender but still retain some firmness, approximately 15 minutes. Remove the potatoes from the water with a slotted spoon and drain them thoroughly.
3
Meanwhile, prepare another large pot of salted water and bring it to a rolling boil. Next, add the carrots and cook them until they are tender but still retain some firmness, about 15 minutes. Drain the carrots and mash them using a fork or potato masher.
4
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) and set it aside for now.
5
In a large frying pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent.
6
Add the ground beef to the pan with the onion and cook until it is well browned. Remove any excess fat from the pan, then stir in some flour and cook for just 1 minute.
7
Add ketchup and beef broth to the pan, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
8
In a 2 quart casserole dish, spread an even layer of the ground beef on the bottom. Next, add a layer of mashed carrots on top.
9
Then, spread the mashed potato mixture evenly over the carrots. Sprinkle some remaining shredded cheese on top.
10
Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until it is golden brown. Serve your dish hot and enjoy!
