Classic Ham and Bean Soup
Ingredients

  • 1 pound dry great northern beans, sorted and rinsed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 ham hock
  • 2 cups chopped ham
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper, or to taste

Combine water and beans in a substantial container; heat it vigorously over high thermal energy. Introduce salt into the mixture and take the pot away from the heat source; cover it, and allow it to rest for 1 hour.

Add carrots, onion, celery, garlic, mustard, and bay leaves to the container with beans; blend everything well. Introduce a ham hock into the pot and bring it to a boil; decrease the heat to low and let it simmer for 1 hour.

Remove the ham hock from the pot and discard it. Introduce chopped ham into the mixture and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Season with ground white pepper according to your preference.
