Ingredients
- 8 large baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 2 teaspoons butter, divided
- 1/2 cup milk, or as needed
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 1/2 pounds beef sausage
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water, or as needed
Instructions
1
Firstly, heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 175 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, fill a saucepan with sufficient water to submerge the potatoes and bring them to a rolling boil. Cook for approximately 20 minutes, or until they're tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork.
3
Subsequently, drain the potatoes and combine them with 1 teaspoon of butter and an adequate amount of milk to achieve your preferred level of creaminess. Continue mashing or using an electric mixer until the potatoes are smooth and uniform.
4
At this stage, sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
5
Then, heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the sausage until it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit (or until heated through). Remove the cooked sausage from the pan and set it aside.
6
Add another teaspoon of butter to the same skillet, then sauté the onions over medium heat until they're tender and lightly browned.
7
Mix the contents of a gravy packet with water as instructed on the package label, and then add this mixture to the skillet with the onions. Stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming, and allow the gravy to thicken.
8
Pour half of the prepared gravy into a square casserole dish, coating its bottom evenly. Arrange the cooked sausages in a layer over the gravy, and you can choose to butterfly them if desired.
9
Then, pour the remaining gravy over the sausages and top with a layer of mashed potatoes.
10
Finally, place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake it uncovered for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are evenly browned.
