Classic Apple Strudel
Ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lard, melted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 1/2 cups butter, melted
  • 1 cup toasted bread crumbs
  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • 3 1/2 pounds apples - peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 3/4 cups white sugar
Instructions
1
Combine the flour in a large bowl and sift it thoroughly.
2
Mix the egg, water, white sugar, lard, and salt together in the bowl until well combined.
3
Knead the mixture until it becomes soft and pliable, working through any lumps.
4
Apply a thin layer of butter to the dough, using approximately 1 tablespoon.
5
Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let it rest for about an hour, allowing the dough to relax.
6
In a separate bowl, combine the bread crumbs and 3/4 cup of melted butter.
7
Add the ground walnuts, apples, raisins, cinnamon, and sugar to the bread crumb mixture.
8
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), ensuring it is at the correct temperature.
9
Butter a medium-sized baking dish lightly, making sure to cover the entire surface.
10
Cover your work surface with a clean tablecloth or cotton sheet, and dust it lightly with flour.
11
Roll out the dough into a very thin rectangle, as thin as tissue paper, and place it on the floured surface.
12
Carefully remove any excess dough from the edges, making sure to leave a clean border around the strudel.
13
Sprinkle approximately 1/2 cup of melted butter over the dough, making sure to cover it evenly.
14
Spread the bread crumb mixture across the dough, leaving a two-inch border on all sides.
15
Fold one end of the dough over the filling, and then roll it into a tight cylinder to form the strudel.
16
Cut the strudel so that it will fit comfortably in your baking dish, taking care not to cut too deeply.
17
Place the strudel in the prepared baking dish, and brush it with any remaining butter.
18
Bake the strudel in your preheated oven until it is golden brown and the apples are tender, about 1 hour.
