Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups dried pinto beans
- 3 quarts water
- 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 2/3 cups tomato puree
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 cup dry bread crumbs
Instructions
1
First, combine the beans and water in a large cooking vessel.
2
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then continue to cook until the beans are nearly tender, approximately 1 and a half hours.
3
Add a pinch of 1 and a half teaspoons of chili powder and a dash of 1 and a half teaspoons of salt to the beans during this time.
4
Meanwhile, in a separate cooking vessel, break up the ground beef into small pieces and heat it over medium-high heat.
5
Add sliced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, stirring constantly until the onion is softened and the meat is browned.
6
Remove excess grease from the skillet, then stir in a spoonful of tomato puree, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, and a sprinkle of salt.
7
Add the bread crumbs to this mixture before stirring it into the pot with the beans, adding more water if necessary to achieve your desired consistency.
8
Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed before serving.
