  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine chocolate and butter in the top of a saucepan placed over a pot of gently bubbling water; heat over medium intensity until the chocolate has fully incorporated, approximately 5 minutes.

Combine granulated sugar, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt in a mixing vessel; stir in roughly 1/4 cup of milk. Introduce the sugar mixture to the melted chocolate and blend until a smooth consistency is achieved. Add any remaining milk. Place the saucepan over direct heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches a boil and thickens, roughly 1 minute longer.

Return the saucepan to the pot of vigorously boiling water, cover it with a lid, and cook for an additional 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in a hint of vanilla. Allow the mixture to cool, refrigerate it for 3 hours or overnight before serving.
