Ingredients
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar
- 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 cups bread flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil, or as needed
Instructions
1
Combine milk and water in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Continue heating until the mixture reaches 110 degrees F (43 degrees C), as indicated by an instant-read thermometer. Remove the saucepan from the heat source and add sugar, stirring until it dissolves completely.
2
Pour the mixture into a cup or other cylindrical container; sprinkle yeast on top of it. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes, or until the yeast becomes frothy and fragrant.
3
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt; mix until well combined. Gradually add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
4
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it quickly for 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball.
5
Grease a large bowl with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add the dough; toss it around to coat evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a towel, then let the dough rise in a warm environment until it has doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
6
Return the dough to the work surface and punch it down gently. Apply a small amount of olive oil to your hands and knead the dough again for 1 minute. Divide it into 5 equal portions and flatten each portion out into a thick rectangle.
7
Place the rectangles of dough onto a greased baking sheet and brush the tops with a thin layer of olive oil. Allow the dough to rest for 20 minutes.
8
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) while the dough rests.
9
Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 12 minutes, then switch to the broil setting until the tops of the rolls turn golden brown, approximately 1 minute. Remove the bread from the baking sheet and let it cool completely before cutting it in half lengthwise.
