Chef John's Italian Pesto Party Bread
Ingredients
  • 1 (16 ounce) package pizza dough
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, or as needed for dusting
  • 1/3 cup prepared pesto sauce
  • 6 thin slices provolone cheese
  • 2 ounces sliced prosciutto, torn into ribbons
  • 1/3 cup diced banana peppers
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (230 degrees Celsius).
2
Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
3
Take the pizza dough and place it on a surface dusted with flour, then roll it out into a rectangular shape, approximately 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch thick. Allow the dough to relax occasionally if it springs back.
4
Spread a layer of pesto evenly onto the dough, leaving about 1 inch of space around the edges.
5
Sprinkle provolone cheese, prosciutto, and peppers evenly over the pesto layer.
6
Roll the dough tightly in one direction to achieve the longest length possible, finishing with the seam facing downwards. Gently press down on the dough to flatten it slightly and lightly dust the top with flour.
7
Using a pizza wheel, cut the dough into three long, even strips. Arrange these strips side by side but not touching, with the middle strip facing upwards and the other two downwards.
8
Braid the strips together to form a round shape, curling the ends under and tucking any loose strands away.
9
Transfer the braided dough to the prepared baking sheet.
10
Place the wreath-shaped dough in a preheated oven and bake until it's nicely browned, approximately 30 minutes.
11
Remove the dough from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving warm or at room temperature.
