  • 2 cups self-rising flour

  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream, plus more for brushing
  • 4 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 3 drops vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, or 220 degrees Celsius. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.

Heat butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly to allow the foam to dissipate. Continue cooking until the butter turns a light golden color, approximately 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.

Mix self-rising flour and 1/4 cup granulated sugar in a bowl, whisking until well combined. Add milk, 1/4 cup heavy cream, and toasted butter; blend just until the ingredients come together.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape it into a rectangle about 1 inch thick. Divide the dough in half lengthwise, then cut each half into three equal pieces. Place the shortcake portions on the prepared baking sheet and brush with cream; sprinkle with sugar.

Prepare sliced strawberries by sprinkling them with 1/4 cup granulated sugar; stir until the sugar dissolves and the berries release their juice, about 1 hour in the refrigerator.

Beat 3/4 cup heavy cream, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and a few drops of vanilla extract in a bowl with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

Split the shortcakes in half and place the bottom half in a serving bowl. Spoon strawberries and their juice over the shortcake half, followed by the top half of the shortcake. Spoon more strawberries and juice over the shortbread, finishing with a dollop of whipped cream.
