Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 8 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 3 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- 3 cups diced ham
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the optimal temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, spray a standard-sized baking dish measuring 9x13 inches with cooking spray to prevent food from sticking.
3
In a separate pot, bring the water to its boiling point and add diced potatoes. Allow them to cook for approximately 5-10 minutes, or until they are almost tender.
4
To stop the cooking process and make handling easier, transfer the potatoes to a colander and rinse them under cold running water until they have cooled down enough to be handled comfortably.
5
Drain the potatoes thoroughly and set them aside for further use.
6
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are tender, taking around 5 minutes to achieve this.
7
Add a spoonful of flour, a dash of Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
8
Gradually pour in milk, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens, taking approximately 5 minutes to achieve this.
9
Stir in shredded Cheddar cheese until it has melted and blended with the sauce.
10
Lay half of the potatoes in the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Top with 1 and a half cups of diced ham and half of the Cheddar cheese sauce.
11
Repeat the layering process by adding another layer with the remaining potatoes, ham, and sauce.
12
Bake your dish in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until the top is lightly browned.
