Ingredients
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 dash hot pepper sauce
- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup quick-cooking grits
- 1/4 cup butter
- 12 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is equivalent to 175 degrees Celsius.
2
Next, take a non-stick baking dish measuring two quarts in size and lightly coat it with butter or cooking spray to prevent the food from sticking.
3
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together milk, egg, garlic powder, and hot pepper sauce until you achieve a smooth and consistent mixture. Set this mixture aside for the time being.
4
In a separate saucepan, bring water and salt to a rolling boil. Then, add grits to the boiling water and stir constantly until they thicken, typically taking between 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from heat and add butter along with half of the Cheddar cheese.
5
Mix the egg mixture you set aside earlier into the cooked grits until well combined, and then pour this mixture into your prepared baking dish.
6
Finally, sprinkle the remaining Cheddar cheese over the top of the grits in your baking dish.
7
Bake the dish in your preheated oven until the cheese is melted and the grits are set, which usually takes around one hour.
8
Allow the dish to cool for 20 to 30 minutes before serving, and make sure your grits have a cornbread-like texture.
