Ingredients
- nonstick cooking spray
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup regular grits, uncooked
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1 1/2 cups grated sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or more to taste
- 1 pinch paprika, or as needed
Instructions
1
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
2
Next, take a 2-quart casserole dish and give it a generous coating of nonstick cooking spray to prevent food from sticking.
3
In a large pot, bring water and salt to a rolling boil over high heat. Then, add the grits and gradually reduce the heat to a low simmer. Allow the mixture to cook until it reaches your desired level of tenderness, which should take approximately 30 minutes.
4
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked grits. Gradually add a beaten egg to the mixture, followed by 1 and 1/4 cups of grated Cheddar cheese. Next, add milk, Worcestershire sauce, melted butter, a pinch of pepper, garlic powder, and a dash of hot sauce. Mix everything together until it's smooth and well combined.
5
Pour the mixture into your prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle the remaining 1 and 1/4 cups of Cheddar cheese on top, followed by a light dusting of paprika for added color. Cover the dish with a lid.
6
Place the casserole in your preheated oven and let it cook until the mixture thickens and the cheese is fully melted, which should take around 1 hour. Remove the lid for the last 10 minutes to allow a crispy crust to form on top.
