Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons margarine, divided
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 (30 ounce) package frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed
- ground black pepper to taste
- 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of celery soup
- 1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
- 1/2 pound diced ham
- 2 cups cornflakes
- 2 tablespoons margarine
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a medium-high temperature, specifically 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius.
2
Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Introduce the onion into this mixture and cook until it becomes soft and translucent, taking approximately 5 minutes. Stir in another 2 tablespoons of butter until it has fully incorporated and melted. Remove the pot from the heat source.
3
Combine the hash brown potatoes with black pepper in a bowl, stirring until they are evenly coated. Add Cheddar cheese, condensed soups, sour cream, and diced ham to this mixture; stir until everything is well combined. Transfer the potato mixture to a large, rectangular baking dish.
4
In a separate bowl, mix together cornflakes and 2 tablespoons of melted butter until the cornflakes are evenly coated. Sprinkle this mixture on top of the potato casserole.
5
Place the prepared casserole in your preheated oven and bake until it reaches a golden brown color, taking between 45 to 60 minutes.
