Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 3 large Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust (see footnote for recipe link)
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a high temperature, specifically 425 degrees Fahrenheit or 220 degrees Celsius.
2
Next, take a 10-inch oven-safe skillet and generously apply butter to its surface. Then, evenly distribute granulated sugar over the top of the butter.
3
Arrange apple quarters in a circular pattern, with their rounded sides facing downwards, on top of the butter and sugar mixture.
4
Place the skillet over medium-high heat and allow it to cook until the butter has melted, the sugar dissolves, and begins to transform into a caramelized state. Continue cooking until the apples become tender and the caramel starts to darken, taking around 10-12 minutes.
5
Remove the skillet from heat and set it aside.
6
Cover your work surface with a layer of flour and roll out the pie dough into an 11-inch circle. Use your fingers to pinch the edge of the crust, creating a decorative ruffle around its perimeter.
7
Carefully place the rolled-out pie dough on top of the apple mixture, tucking its edges around the apples to create a secure seal.
8
Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake until the crust is golden brown, approximately 20 minutes. Allow it to cool for a short period of time, about 5 minutes.
9
To release the tarte from its pan, place a large plate over the top of the skillet and carefully invert it. Gently scrape any remaining apple pieces that have stuck to the pan back onto the crust.
