Can-Cooked Turkey
Ingredients
  • aluminum foil
  • 15 inch wooden stake
  • new 15 gallon metal garbage can with lid
  • 1 (12 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed
Instructions
1
Create a square-shaped cooking surface by laying out three large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil on the grass. \nPosition a wooden stake in the center of the aluminum foil, securing it firmly into the ground.\nFill the garbage can's lid with a substantial amount of charcoal, then ignite it. \nCarefully place the thawed turkey onto the stake, positioning its legs downwards. \nInvert the garbage can over the turkey and place it on top, creating a makeshift cooking vessel. \nAdd piles of lit charcoal to the top and surrounding areas of the can, ensuring even heat distribution. \nAllow the turkey to cook for at least 1 1/2 hours, or until the coals have extinguished. \nDuring cooking, avoid lifting the can to prevent heat loss and maintain even cooking. \nOnce done, gently brush off the charcoal from the can's surface and lift it carefully, as some residual heat may escape. \nTo verify the turkey's internal temperature, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. The reading should be at least 180 degrees F (83 degrees C).
