Ingredients
- 3/4 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 3/4 pound ground pork
- 1/2 cup olive oil, divided
- 1 large carrot, finely chopped
- 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
- 1/4 bunch fresh parsley, stems and leaves chopped separately
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 6 russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
Instructions
1
Heat a substantial cooking vessel over a moderate heat setting. Introduce ground beef and ground pork into the skillet, stirring until they achieve a browned and crumbly consistency, approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Discard the excess fat that separates from the mixture. Add a generous amount of olive oil, along with chopped carrots, onions, celery, parsley stems, and tomatoes. Combine the ingredients thoroughly.
2
Add a sliced bell pepper to the mixture, blending it with the other components. Season the dish with paprika, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and cayenne pepper to enhance its flavor. Allow the vegetables to soften slightly, taking around 10 minutes.
3
In a separate process, preheat your oven to a high temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
4
Transfer the meat mixture to a substantial baking dish.
5
In another cooking vessel, heat a remaining amount of olive oil over moderate heat. Cook diced potatoes until they acquire a lightly browned appearance, approximately 10 minutes. Combine the cooked potatoes with the meat mixture in the baking dish.
6
Place the moussaka in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the baking dish from the oven and incorporate chopped parsley leaves into the mixture.
7
In a separate container, whisk together eggs, yogurt, flour, and baking soda until they form a spreadable consistency. Pour this mixture over the meat mixture in the baking dish.
8
Return the baking dish to the oven and cook until the top is golden brown, taking an additional 15 minutes.
